Pride Weekend Cities, History of Pride Parades, Marriage Ammendment Defeat, Hipocrytical Republicans, Website Update Submissions

Enjoy the weekend blogger friends. I want to wish a special shout out to all of my friends having PRIDE celebrations this weekend in: Albuquerque, Birmingham, Boise, Boston, Flagstaff, Los Angelas, Milwaukee, Omaha, Philidelphia, and Washington DC. Pride season is kicking into high gear and I hope we all take a moment to reflect on what this is really supposed to be about. A lot of us are just going for the parade, the hot guys, and the chance to "gay it up", and while that is all good and should be celebrated, the reasons for Pride run a lot deeper than that. The celebration part of Pride is just that, and it was handled very eloquently by blogger friend Scottie, at his blog, where he was explaining Pride to his mother; "Mom, you know when your church has Revival services and Tent Meetings (weeklong services in a tent)? Or when your church has a pot-luck dinner? It is so you can fellowship and be around people that believe the same as you. You are all of like mind. OR those big Christian conferences you and dad go to once a year in Atlanta? It is very similar. We are people coming together to celebrate who we are and that we exist." Well said Scottie!!

But also Pride is about being proud enough to stand up for our right to exist. Why is Pride primarily celebrated in June? I think if you are young, gay, and are not really sure what brought this about, as a minimum of understanding, you should read the wiki encyclopedia listing for the Stonewall Riots. I salute the young people of today who have brought the national average "coming out" age, to drop dramatically in recent years from 26 to 16-18. You all show that there is hope for the future by living out and proud lives, showing your friends and families that you are no different than anyone else, except for maybe a little more flair and style. You want love, understanding, friendship and acceptance, just like any other class of people. But realize these bolder young turks of the GLBT community, have reached this by being held up on the backs of our older and earlier pioneers, that shouldered the brunt of the ostracism, and finally tried to break out of the secret lives gays were living, and started a revolution for equal rights for all the GLBT community.

As for the week in news, of course the "Marriage Ammendment", took center stage. Even in the small victory of defeat in the Senate, there are opponents that actually WANT us to win a battle or two. I say small victory, because though the ammendment didnt pass, it brought more deviciveness to the country, rallied the conservative base, and is STILL, even after defeat, making it impossible to pass this year, being debated again in the House in the next month or so to keep the Republicans alive. I want to share with you a list that has been floating around. I find it fascinating that these same people are calling for the passage of this ammendment, citing that it will enforce the "sanctity of marriage". Where has the "sanctity" gotten them??

Ronald Reagan - divorced the mother of two of his children to marry Nancy Reagan, who bore him a daughter only 7 months after the marriage.

Bob Dole - divorced the mother of his child, who had nursed him through the long recovery from his war wounds.

Newt Gingrich - divorced his wife who was dying of cancer.

Dick Armey - House Majority Leader - divorced

Sen. Phil Gramm of Texas - divorced

Gov. John Engler of Michigan - divorced

Gov. Pete Wilson of California - divorced

George Will - divorced

Sen. Lauch Faircloth - divorced

Rush Limbaugh - Rush and his current wife Marta have six marriages and four divorces between them.

Rep. Bob Barr of Georgia - Barr, not yet 50 years old, has been married three times. Barr had the audacity to author and push the "Defense of Marriage Act." The current joke making the rounds on Capitol Hill is "Bob Barr...WHICH marriage are you defending?!?

Sen. Alfonse D'Amato of New York - divorced

Sen. John Warner of Virginia - divorced (once married to Liz Taylor.)

Gov. George Allen of Virginia - divorced

Henry Kissinger - divorced

Rep. Helen Chenoweth of Idaho - divorced

Sen. John McCain of Arizonia - divorced

Rep. John Kasich of Ohio - divorced

Rep. Susan Molinari of New York - Republican National Convention Keynote Speaker - divorced

So ... homosexuals are going to destroy the institution of marriage? Wait a minute, it seems the Christian Heterosexual Republicans are doing a fine job without anyone's help!

GG, loved your comment about the opportunities younger folks have today, being brought about by the hard work of those who came before. Guess I'm just getting older...sigh...but civil rights, womens' rights, gay rights...things that seem so DUH! to me, have to cost so many such hardship...why? Hate that all I can think of is "Can't we all just get along?"...but it does come to mind. Enough rambling...

Joel

Thanks for the mention and YES, it is about being proud of who we are!
